Can you use existing cameras in a computer vision project?
Often, yes. Cameras already installed can be used for computer vision when their resolution, angle, lighting and connection are suitable for the event you want to detect. Ideally, test with real scenes before replacing any equipment.
What to assess
- Resolution and compression.
- Angle, height and distance to the target.
- Lighting throughout the day and night.
- Obstructions and changes in the scene.
- Stability of the video stream and the network.
- Compatibility with VMS, RTSP or ONVIF.
The application defines the requirement
Counting people at an entrance, detecting a vehicle at long range and identifying a small object are different problems. The camera has to be assessed against the desired event.
Start with a real sample
Before replacing infrastructure, test representative scenes and technical feasibility. This reduces risk and shows where changes are actually needed.
