Can existing cameras be used for Computer Vision?

One of the first questions in Computer Vision projects is whether cameras must be replaced. Often they do not, but reusing existing infrastructure depends on the application and image quality.

What to assess

• Resolution and compression.
• Angle, height and target distance.
• Lighting throughout the operating period.
• Occlusions and scene changes.
• Stream stability and connectivity.
• Compatibility with VMS, RTSP or other interfaces.

The application defines the requirement

Counting people at an entrance, detecting a vehicle at long distance and identifying a small object are different problems. The camera must be assessed against the desired event.

Start with a real sample

Before replacing infrastructure, test representative scenes and technical feasibility. This reduces risk and shows where changes are truly necessary.
